Nishiki market Hi,I’m Keiko from Osaka!

Nishiki Market is a narrow street filled with about 130 food stands and restaurants.

It is called “Kyoto’s Kitchen” and this market has been the center of traditionsl Kyoto food culture among locals for many years.

But recently Nishiki Market has been also getting popular among foreign tourists.

It seemed most of the visitors were foreign tourists when I visited there few weeks ago.

1.Sengyo Kimura/鮮魚木村

Sengyo kimura Sengyo Kimura is a fish store which has been run since Edo era.

It sells various kinds of fish and seafoods.

Many restaurants including Michelin three star restaurants buy fish here because it’s so fresh and good.
Sengyo kimura There is provided an small eat-in corner so you can eat your favorite seafoods immediately after you buy them.

There are various kinds of “fresh sashimi sticks” such as Carpaccio of toro-salmon (fatty salmon) and carpaccio of raw tuna.

These sashimi sticks cost only 200 yen for each.

I tried carpaccio of toro salmon with lemon juice which was so fresh and delicious.

I recommend you to try these sashimi sticks!

2.Konnamonja(Kyotofu Fujino)/こんなもんじゃ(京とうふ藤野)

Konnamonjya Konnamonja is popular for its tofu donuts and soy milk soft ice cream.

You can also get healthy tofu or soymilk sweets as a souvenir.

I tried a tofu croquette here, and it was delicious.

Outside of the croquette was crispy, but inside of it was so soft like melting in my mouth.

You’ll never know what’s taste like until you try it!

Houkyuuan Houkyuuan sells tempura with sticks which is very easy to walk and eat with.

This tempura is made from fish cake and has many varieties of tastes like cheese, potato butter and octopus and so on.

Fish cake tempura is a typical food for a walk-and-eat tour at Nishiki Market.

4.Inoue Tsukudaniten(井上佃煮店)

Inoue tsukudani ten Inoue Tsukudaniten has established since Meiji period (in 1884).

Although this store’s name is “tsukudani” which is fish or vegetables boiled down with soy source, they also offer many kinds of Kyoto home-style dishes.

Hand-made side dishes using Kyoto vegetable and Chirimen Sansho(Small dried sardine with sansho pepper) are the famous foods here.

The most famous food here is chocolate croquette which costs only 100 yen.

You can enjoy the harmony of melting chocolate and the crispy surface of the croquette.

It’s best food for chocolate lovers.

5.Daiyasu/だいやす

Daiyasu Daiyasu is a popular restaurant which serves mainly fresh oysters.

Japanese sake goes well with oysters very much that I recommend you to try it!

This restaurant has not only oysters and Japanese sake but also various seafood and drinks.

Also, you can order how they are cooked like raw, fried or simmered.

If you want to avoid raw seafood, you can order fried one.

How to get from JR Kyoto station to Nishiki Market?

By Subway
Subways are best way to go to Nishiki Market from JR Kyoto station.

Take a subway Karasuma-line bound for Kokusai Kaikan and get off at the second stop”Shijyo station”

It will take about 5 minute from Shijyo station to Nishiki Market.

By walk
If you want to walk from JR Kyoto station to Nishiki Market, It will take about 30 minutes by walk.

First,come out of the JR Kyoto station and go straight along the wide street called “Karasuma-dori”

Then turn right into Nishikikoji-dori,and you’ll see Nishiki Market.
